Audience Theory and Research

The genre of this video is pop. So I will be talking about and researching the audience that like pop music.

Pop music includes an energetic mix of styles and artists, and that's what we love about it. Up tempo and familiar are words that best describe pop.
Pop is a genre which ran from 1967 to 1972 with was when it was most famous until disco took over in 1977, then two year later harder-edged themes started to come out.

The genre pop, contrived and was mainly aimed/marketed to appeal to pre-teens and teenagers, produced in an assembly-line process, driven by producers, often using faceless singers and has an upbeat sound. The songs typically have sing along choruses, seemingly childlike themes and a contrived innocence, occasionally combined with an undercurrent of sexual double enterer. Pop songs are also defined as having a catchy melody, simple chords, simple harmonies, dancy but it is not necessarily danceable be, repetitive Riffs, use of a vocally-multiplied refrain. Pop rarely has guitar solos, and often use a single-clap or double-clap as prominent percussions.

The song lyrics often are about romantic love, but many times are about just feeling good or being happy, with references to sunshine, loving one another, toys, colours, nonsense words, etc.

Before people didn't always get to watch musicians play there music or even listen to it, they would usually watch it in bars, the theatres, on the radio, the juke box or the video juke box that was until the television was invented. When televsion was invented music wasn't that important until top of the pops was made in the 1970's. Then in the 1980's cable was invented with MTV as a 24 hour music channel which made a need for music videos, then in the late 80's and 90's growth of the genre based channels evolved also black music breaks in to the industry things such as hip-hop, reggae, and R&B started to come out. And now a days you can watch music videos in your house, on the net, and even on you pone.

The age group that would follow pop is the young teens and younger children getting in to their teen years. Pop is appropriate for young girls and children because it doesn't influence them in any wrong way, it just allows children and teens to act there age. Their audience may take the fashion senescence of their role model in the pop industry and may want to be a singer but will be happier to just listen to their music.

This genre relates to the 'Blumers and Katz theory 1974' on what the consumers choose and use...... The genre usually uses Diversion, meaning that it allows escape from everyday life, problem, and routines and you'll also find that personal relationships is used, using the media for emotional and other interaction e.g substituting soap operas for family life.

Stuart Hall is a theorist. His one of the main theorist of the reception theory. Stuart Hall had established what ever it be from a programme to a film or a book, the person who created it will see it in one way and the people will always interpreter what ever it is they see in their own way based on cultural background and life experiences.

Andrew Goodwin music video Theory

Music video Vanessa Carlton - A thousand miles.
The genre characteristics for this music video is pop. I have chosen this song because the genre is the same as the genre i will be focusing on for my media course work.

This music video has a white female, which you'll usually see in all pop genres. The characteristics of the music video, such as hair, minimal make-up,modest outfit, presence of a piano and it is set in a rural area. All the characteristics help the audience define the music video as a pop-genre.
By having the artist play her piano in a rural area, the audience recognise the type of genre it is and know whether they'll like it or not. If the producer had put a girl in a ghetto area, a-lot of chains around her neck, and have her half dressed then we know straight away that it is not a pop dong it is R&B or Rap.

The video and the lyrics do have a relationship as it is shown through her actions in the video. For example the chorus begins with 'a thousand miles' and she can be seen moving from place to place with her piano implying that she is traveling those 'thousand miles' for the subject of the song. Another example of the link between the video and the lyrics is the setting of the video, when she begins to sing and says "making my way downtown" the scenary changes to her moving along down-town.The video and the lyrics always has a connection in this video, by doing this it not keeps the audience aware of what the song is about it shows them a story, makes the audience relate to it and feel involved.

In the video, the instruments have been seen through out; making a relationship between both visually seeing them and hearing them. Through out the video everything seems to be done around the piano and the musician but there is a clip of the strings being played. I believe that showing these instruments allows the audience to know that technology has not produced the music, really musicians have.

Voyeurism is the sexual interest in or watching people engaged in intimate behaviours.
To sell records, voyeurism has been used from the start, when music videos where invented. voyeurism was and still is used because people like to see something which will cause controversy and some seem to think videos that are made today as a form of art. Voyeurism is basicly used to sell records by using sexual references and I believe that by using this the music doesn't seem to matter any more because half the viewers are only watching the videos because of the sexual content that it involves rather then liking the music and wanting it.

Many music videos from a large number of genres have voyeuristic treatment of the female body. But because the genre pop is usually followed by young females and all children. The videos tend not to have anything that would influence young children into seeing the female body as an object or to influence young females into wanting to sell their bodies. Pop video's tend to have the opposite of voyeuristic treatment in their videos and try and give the innocent, pure, classy, casual, and the typical teenage look to their artist.

Intertextuality simply means when some kind of an element from an original image which is well know and is used as your own in your own way e.g when people say 'oh that's similar to that advert' that's called Intertextuality. This technique is used so others who see and like the original may even like some thing that is not usually their type or style. This video doesn't have any inter-textual element that I know of. But usually there's often inter-textual references from films, t.v programmes and other music videos.

Generic conventions =)

For this section I will be researching two musical genres.

The two Genres I have pick is Classical and Rock. The reason for this is that I think these two genres have many differences. “Even if you are not an established musician, you can easily distinguish rock music from what is termed as classical music. There are several large differences between Rock and classical.
Read more: Difference Between Rock and Classical | Difference Between | Rock vs Classical http://www.differencebetween.net/miscellaneous/difference-between-rock-and-classical/#ixzz113ASJUJL

Both Genres are different but they are the same form of art. People see painters and sculptors as two different forms of art, but both are forms of visual art yet are different sub form, you can not say “this one’s better”, they’re two separate Genres. It comes down to a matter of taste, you either like it or you don't. There are great artists in both rock and classical.

The differences are show below....

Classical

Rock

Instruments that are used

Rock is much freer musically

Music adheres to a strict set of rules

Has recently been introduced to the music industry

Music is mostly harder than rock

With stands time equally

Is and has been in the music industry for longer

Is loud mainly attracts teenagers

Withstands time easily

Has many electrical instruments

Is clamming and soothing

Mainly attracts teenagers

Has a rage of followers (rage as in age range)

Has a wider range of audience

A Rock band that you might know is 'Train' and the classical music which was made by Beethoven.

Iconography is the branch of art history which studies the identification, description, and the interpretation of the content of images. The word iconography literally means "image writing", and comes from the Greek "image''.

The genre I would like to focus on is the genre 'Rock'. With this genre and all other genres there are particular things that lets the audiences know what type of genre it is such as location, costume, colour, camera, movement, editing style and instruments. But Rock is more of an obvious genre, In rock videos you tend to have a dark atmosphere with a lot of electric base instruments, their music tends to be louder than the singers voice and has a fast tempo. We can also tell from the locations because the rock music videos are mostly set in dull dark and smoky bars with little room and is usually very hectic, there camera movements are very sharp depending on the song and sometimes moves with the tempo. And the colour and costume are also very dull with blacks, greys, whites and greens, I think these colours are used to show sadness and darkness relating to the devil and so on. Their costumes are usually black basic clothing, hair is usually all colours and tends to be long and maybe covers some artists faces.
An example of a rock video is shown below.....

Sweding Task- Britney Spears

For the Sweding task we were give a music video, the music video was the famous Britney Spears song 'Hit me Baby.' We all got split up in a group of 4-5 people after we had watched the video. Our teachers then gave every group a section of the video to do a very detailed story board on, once we had finished our story board all the story boards were mixed up and given out to each of the groups to go out and film what we thought was happening.

At first I thought making a video is much harder than trying to recreate one but it seems that I was wrong. It may have been due to others lac of vague story boarding but it's also very possible that it was just much harder to get positions of the shots perfect and the timing correct.

Even though everything had been made much easier for us I still believe that the time that was given to us was just not enough for the filming half of the project. We had taking a lot of takes when we had started off but then the group started to get the hang of thing. One other problem that there was, was that the actress that had to be Britney Spear
s had a few difficulty in understanding what position we needed her to be in it may have not all been her fault due to inaccurate directions, but it did all start to work out as every one started to get comfortable.

Editing the video, well when it comes to sweding a video, we had to make sure the song had fit in with the video, so all the words had to match and look as if the actress was singing the song. this by far had to be the hardest part of the project. Editing was not one of my strengths because I had no practise but once I had got the hang of things I started to realise that it just needed a lot of attention rather than it being a quick process. Editing actually took longer than the filming it's self it also helped us fix many mistakes through the mac program rather than us going out and shooting a whole new shot.

Once every group had finished their section the video had been put together and came out better than the original =).
No, everything had been put together and I think that when the classes realised that we made a good remake of the original and in just 2 hours.

Evaluation of Bohemian Rap Task

For our Bohemian Rap task i found that we had quite a few problems from when we were filming to when we started to edit the clips.
One of the problems we had with filming the music video was that we could not start from the beginning if we had made a mistake, also we had to keep bringing the song back to where we made the mistakes, which had wasted time and made our task much harder. Due to mistakes we did not have enough time to finish the song and had not had enough camera techniques in the music video. We also did not have correct equipment to achieve all our camera techniques.

The things that worked well was that editing the clips were easy and we were able to fit it in with the original audio. I had found that when we had the song playing at the same time as filming the Bohemian Rap song it had made it much harder and it wasted valuable time. When lip synching the song I had found that we had made mistakes within the lyrics but i believe it was only a few mistakes. Due to us not having time to learn the lyrics i believe we have done well for our selves even though we made a few mistakes.
